NNH Receives $10,000 Grant to Purchase "A Hand Up" Truck for Thrift Store Donations
Northside Neighborhood House received a $10,000 grant from the Community Foundation of Greater Chattanooga to purchase “A Hand Up” Truck for thrift store donations. The NNH has two thrift stores located at 209 Minor Street and 241 Signal Mountain Road which play a role in funding NNH programs. Larger items like furniture and appliances can be picked up by calling 267-2217.
President of NNH, Zack Willmore, said, “We are proud to be celebrating, in February, 87 years of providing a hand up, not a hand out. The past two years have brought new clients through our doors who are struggling to meet their family’s most basic needs. We have offered support to many who are trying to advance themselves through education as well. This work would not be possible if it wasn’t for the generous support of community donations to our thrift stores.”

Holiday Joy Spread to All
Just over 150 families had food on their tables and over 400 children received toys in December. Thanks to all of you who collected toys, money, food and helped with the food boxes and toy distribution.
Here are a few quotes:
- "Until this year, we have been blessed to be giving to the Angel Tree and other programs to help others in need. I haven't the words to express our gratitude. Thank you just isn't enough."
- "In my house there is barely any heat, my pipes just froze and I have no funds. There is no way my kids would have a Christmas without you. Thank you so very much."
- "This is my first Christmas with my kids. I am a recovering drug addict and alcoholic. You guys made it possible to spend this Christmas happy and full of joy."
'Tis the Season...Time for Santa's Workshop at NNH!
One part of the Direct Assistance program is an annual Christmas program, called "Santa's Workshop", where NNH provides toys to children living north of the river who might otherwise not have a Christmas. The parent or guardian "shops" Santa's Workshop for his/her child, ages birth-15.
Each child receives 1 piece of sporting equipment, 1 game, 2 large toys, 3 small toys, 1 stuffed animal, 1 book, crayons, and stocking stuffers.....totaling up to 10 items.
Santa's Workshop is stocked entirely of donations, primarily through toy drives from local schools, churches, and businesses. In just 3 years, NNH has gone from providing toys for 250 children to over 400.
Also, NNH provides over 150 food boxes to individuals and families in need, which contain a one week supply of food.
There are several ways you can help support the NNH and Santa's Workshop this holiday season:
-Bring unwrapped toys to the NNH, which will be given to one of over 400 children who will receive toys from the NNH.
-Make a monetary gift for Santa's Workshop to the NNH.
-Consider volunteering at Santa's Workshop and help parents choose toys for their children.
-Adopt a family and provide their food and/or toys.

NEW!!! Helping Meet the Challenges of Raising Children
Parenting is probably the most challenging job that any of us have. The overwhelming pressures of making the “right” decisions related to another person’s social, emotional, physical and educational well-being is mind boggling. In hopes of providing a hand-up to those we serve with children, the NNH started two programs in June geared towards parents. Baby Basics (a RE:START program) and Parenting classes meet once a month and focus on strengthening parenting skills, educating parents about nutrition, child development, school related issues (to name a few), and providing support. If interested in learning more about this program, please contact Lee Ade Stout at 267-2217.

The Northside Neighborhood House Adult Program has been busy throughout the fall. The Helping Others group has created tote bags for the Memorial Hospital intensive care unit, blankets for the Dialysis Center, and hats for the Erlanger Cancer Center. These women spend their arts and crafts time to give back to our community. We are very proud of their continued effort to inspire and help others. Thank you ladies!

There has been an increased demand this year for basic items related to hygiene and especially for baby items. Below please find a list of items which are needed to help give “a hand up.”

Director’s Corner
The Northside Neighborhood House is fortunate to have dedicated staff that is proud to help provide “a hand up” to those in need. This summer has been a time of change for clients and program participants at the NNH with the departure of three fantastic staff members.
Sue Miller, Thrift Shop assistant for over ten years, retired at the end of July. Jay Parke, a Children’s Program Assistant, who has worked with the children for over six years left to enter the Army. And Chelsea Johnson, our Education Director, left to take a position in the for-profit sector.
We wish all of them well in their new endeavors! With change comes new additions, and the NNH is thrilled to welcome Matt Facey, our new Education Director on board! Matt is a graduate of Notre Dame High School and Mercer University. His years of experience in the school system and passion to serve children, adults and their families will be a huge asset to our Education Program.
Children’s Program….An Amazing Summer
The NNH Children’s Program wrapped up their last week of camp at the end of July. This was one of our most successful summers due to the implementation of a few new programs for the students. In addition to the normal academic based curriculum, students studied various countries, learned about hobbies, interests and different careers. All of this learning came to life through hands-on experiences provided by a number of generous volunteers who shared their time and passions to show our children the endless opportunities which are available to them. Thanks to the following:
