Children's Education

The NNH Afterschool Program serves students in grades K-8 from schools north of the river. Students are divided up into developmentally appropriate age groups and benefit from homework help, academic exercises such as the Reading Eggs Literacy Program and IXL (Math Program), tutoring, mentoring relationships, and enrichment activities such as ballet, art lessons, and more. We are proud to offer our students access to technology through use of iPads and Chromebooks. Students can complete homework assigned through Google Classroom and conduct research. Many of our students don't have access to computers at home so we help bridge the gap.

Each afternoon when they arrive from school, students eat a healthy meal provided through a partnership with YMCA's Mobile Fit Program. They then complete all of their homework with the help of staff and volunteers. After homework, students work on improving their literacy and math skills and then have free time to play outside or socialize with friends.

We also host an eight-week summer camp that focuses on acamdemics, mentoring relationships, enriching opportunities and includes fun field trips and career speakers. There is a strong emphasis on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) learning.

Our education program is unique because our Children's Education Director spends time in the schools throughout the year working hand in hand with NNH afterschool participants and providing support to teachers. Since she is in the schools, she knows the material students are learning and designs curriculum around standards for each grade level.
