Types of Opportunities
Recurring Team Projects
Great for groups looking to make an impact in just a few hours. These 2–3 hour projects are flexible and can often be scheduled during the workday.

- Supporting our thrift stores by categorizing, tagging, and stocking donations

FOR INDIVIDUALS
- Complete the Application. Fill out the volunteer application to tell us more about your interests and availability.
- Submit Required Forms. Before getting started, you’ll need to provide a signed Code of Conduct and a Liability Waiver. Volunteers under 18 will also submit one reference form from a teacher or community leader.
- Schedule Your Interview. After submitting your application, you’ll receive an email with a link to book a brief interview with our Chief Engagement Officer. (Applicants must attend their own interview.)
- Get Matched to an Opportunity. We’ll connect you with a role that fits your interests, whether that’s in our Community Schools, Thrift Stores, Stability Services or special events.
- Start Serving Your Community. Once approved, you’re ready to jump in and make an impact.
FOR GROUPS
- Submit a Group Volunteer Inquiry. Use our group-specific inquiry form to share what your team hopes to do, group size, and timing.
- Connect with Our Chief Engagement Officer. New groups will have a quick phone call or meeting to walk through interests and logistics.
- Sign Liability Waivers. All participants sign a liability waiver before the project.
- Show Up and Serve. We’ll confirm the project details ahead of time and welcome your team on the day of.

Who can volunteer with Northside Neighborhood House?
Volunteers must be at least 16 years old, and those under 18 must have a signed parent or guardian liability waiver. Volunteers under 16 are welcome to participate as part of a supervised group, with at least one adult for every five youth.
What is required to become a volunteer?
- A completed application
- A signed Code of Conduct form
- A signed Liability Waiver (signed by a parent or guardian for volunteers under 18)
- Ongoing volunteers age 18 and older must complete a background check
- Volunteers under 18 must also submit one reference form from a teacher or community leader
Is there an interview process?
Yes. All volunteers participate in a brief interview with our Chief Engagement Officer. After applying, you’ll receive a link to schedule your interview. The applicant must attend their own interview.
How long does the application process take?
A lot of the timeline is up to you. Once your interview is scheduled and your paperwork is submitted, we run a background check that takes about a week to clear. From there, you’re ready to be matched with an opportunity.
Is there a time commitment?
Yes. Volunteers are asked to commit to at least 4 hours per month, spread over 2 or more days, for a minimum of 3 months.
What if I am completing Tennessee Promise hours?
Tennessee Promise students are not required to meet the ongoing monthly commitment, but we encourage continued involvement.
How far in advance should I apply for time-sensitive requirements?
Please submit your application at least 3 weeks before your deadline to allow time for processing and scheduling.
What types of volunteer opportunities are available?
Volunteers can serve in our Community Schools, Thrift Stores, or assist with special events.
Can groups volunteer together?
Yes. We welcome group volunteers. For groups larger than 10, we may ask you to split into smaller teams across nearby sites for capacity and safety reasons.
Where do volunteer opportunities take place?
We serve across multiple locations, including Community Schools, Thrift Stores, and our main office, spanning from Northshore Chattanooga to Sale Creek.
