Why I volunteer
How a Few Helping Hands Lifted a Heavy Holiday Burden
My first direct interaction with Northside Neighborhood House was as a donor at the Soddy-Daisy thrift store. Before retiring and moving to Soddy-Daisy, I had worked downtown for many years and only had a general but positive impression of NNH. I knew it as a place in North Chattanooga where children could find food, shelter, and support. So when I saw the thrift store sign, I recognized the name and felt a connection.
When I began dropping off donations, I noticed how busy the staff always was. There was constant movement, but also a sense of joy in the work. Around that time, I had just wrapped up a project and found myself with extra time. I thought, why not help out? I didn’t know much about nonprofits or thrift stores, but I did know I enjoyed being around people. So I applied, met the team, and got started.
It didn’t take long to figure out where I fit best. As a small woman in my golden years, some tasks were not a natural match, and I have always moved at my own slower pace. But I found my place on the sales floor. There, I could connect with customers, organize merchandise, and help create a welcoming shopping experience. More than anything, I discovered that simply listening to people can be its own kind of service.
As I continued volunteering, I also joined NNH’s Marketing and Development Committee. Through that experience, I gained a deeper understanding of the organization’s mission and how it serves neighbors north of the river. I began to see how everything works together, from thrift store sales to grants, fundraisers, and individual donations, to support programs like Community Schools and stability services.
I started by supporting fundraisers because they were enjoyable and a great way to give back. Over time, I also became a monetary donor. Having seen the organization from the inside, I have full confidence that every dollar is used thoughtfully and effectively. What stood out most to me is how even small contributions can make a meaningful difference. A one-time gift of $25 can provide a child with a gift at Santa’s Workshop. A monthly gift of $25 can help keep the lights on for a family in need.
Volunteers play an essential role in making this work possible. We are not motivated by financial reward, but by the personal fulfillment of knowing we are part of something that truly matters. Volunteering is an investment of time and heart. For me, becoming a donor was simply the next step in that investment.
In retirement, I have the freedom to choose how I spend my time. While family will always come first, my work with Northside Neighborhood House remains a meaningful part of my life. I see the impact through the stories shared each month and in the lives changed across our community. It is a privilege to be part of this work and to share with others the difference NNH is making for our neighbors in northern Hamilton County.
